Before you know it the streets of Five Points in downtown Columbia, S.C. will be covered in all things green for the highly anticipated 26th annual St. Pat’s in Five Points festival on March 15, 2008.

Can't wait 'til the big day for live music? Check out the Battle of the Bands and support local musicians vying for a spot the the Time Warner Cable/Free Times stage. On March 15, the gates will be open from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. giving everyone ample time to take in the sights and sounds of this year’s St. Pat’s in Five Points festival. In helping to eliminate parking dilemmas, the festival organizers have arranged for free shuttle service from a host of satellite parking locations, including Capital City Stadium on Assembly Street.

Nearly 25 bands will be playing on five stages throughout the Five Points area giving festival goers the opportunity to stroll from stage to stage listening to their favorite musical artists. Headlining this year’s celebration will be Edwin McCain, Avett Brothers, Cross Canadian Ragweed and Theory of a Deadman. The Get to the Green 5K Run and 1 Mile Walk will start the morning of March 15 bright and early. As one of the largest road races in the Midlands, over 1,800 local enthusiasts are expected to jog and walk through the beautiful tree lined streets of Shandon.

Families will also have the opportunity to join in on the St. Pat’s celebration on a more kid-friendly scale at the festival’s Children’s Carnival. In Martin Luther King Park, beginning at 10 a.m., children will be able to enjoy everything from face painting and a petting zoo to a rock climbing wall and pony rides. Admission to this area is free; however there will be a charge for various activities. Starting at 10:00 a.m., families can spend time marveling at elaborately decorated floats, enjoying Irish bands and collecting an array of goodies from participants during the First Citizens Parade with a Musical Mile of free viewing along Devine Street.

If festival goers can’t wait until Saturday to get green, they are invited to attend the festival’s official pre-party on Friday, March 14 located on Santee Ave. At the pre-party, attendees can rub elbows with some of the larger-than-life Strongman Competition athletes at the first of four qualifying events. These enormous men will lift, push, and pull their way into Five Points displaying their un-human like strength.

The competition continues on March 15 at 11:00 on Santee Avenue, with finals announced and winners moving on to the national competition later in the year.
